INCISE aims to bring together participants from all disciplines from submarine canyon research. The symposium will be a combination of traditional conference-style oral (with keynote speakers) and poster presentations with a set of break-out working group discussions, focusing on themes which bring together multiple disciplines.

Workshop: Internal waves in submarine canyons

The full-day workshop will run prior to the symposium (Monday 4 th December) and will be a combination of keynote talks and an interactive session. The aim of the workshop is to give an introduction to internal waves and internal tides (not just in canyon systems); explain how to measure internal waves with conventional oceanographic instrumentation and well as using seismic methods and autonomous vehicles; then discuss the interaction of internal waves with sediment transport and the impact of internal waves on biogeochemical cycles and ecosystems.

The interactive session will include a simple data analysis exercise, using repeated CTD casts from a hydrographic station to extract the internal tide signal and calculate its available potential energy.

Venue Information

Our main conference venue is Rutherford House, on Victoria University of Wellington’s Pipitea
campus. From the 4th-7th December this will be used for the icebreaker, keynote presentations, contributed talks and posters. We will also hold the internal wave workshop there.

Pipitea campus is located in the heart of Wellington’s legal, government, and business district. The campus sits adjacent to Wellington’s railway station and bus terminal, Parliament, and is close to the waterfront, and a wide selection of restaurants, bars, and accommodation options.
